Tottenham Hotspur vs Brighton & Hove Albion predictions

Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion, perhaps the two most attack-minded teams in the Premier League, could serve up a classic this weekend.

Both teams are in contention for European qualification this term, with Spurs in the mix for Champions League football and Brighton challenging for the Europa League.

Roberto De Zerbi may well be slightly disappointed that his team are not within touching distance of the top five, with a fifth-place finish possibly bringing a Champions League spot this season.

Brighton have been inconsistent for much of the Premier League campaign. They breezed through to the knockout phase of the Europa League before Christmas, but at times they struggled to balance their continental and domestic commitments.

Even after the group stage concluded, Brighton struggled to get going. In their seven games since then, De Zerbi’s men have collected nine points. They rank 11th in the division over that period – solid if not spectacular.

Yet it is worth putting all this in context. Brighton are currently eighth in the top flight. They have only finished higher than that once in their entire history – and that was under De Zerbi last season.

If the Premier League does indeed have five Champions League places this season, sixth and seventh will probably qualify for the Europa League. Brighton are just one point shy of the top seven following their 4-1 thrashing of arch-rivals Crystal Palace last time out.

As for Tottenham, their supporters would certainly have settled for being in this position as we prepare to enter the final third of the campaign.

Spurs did drop out of the top four last weekend, but they have only lost one of their last eight league games and have key players returning from injury and international duty.

Both teams could do with a win to boost their European chances – we fancy the hosts to get the job done.

Tottenham to win – 4/5 (bet365)

Tottenham’s sole defeat in that aforementioned eight-game streak came at the Amex Stadium, as Brighton deservedly ran out 4-2 winners in December.

That was a bad night for Ange Postecoglou’s men, but they responded well by taking seven points from the next nine available.

A 2-2 draw with Everton last weekend was disappointing given their opponents equalised in the last minute, but Spurs still have a six-point lead over Manchester United in sixth.

Their home form has been impressive of late, with Tottenham putting together four top-flight wins on the bounce in front of their own fans.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has become a tough place to go, with only the four sides above them in the table boasting better points-per-game records at home.

That is one reason to tip Tottenham. Another is that they could have their strongest XI out on the field again, provided Son Heung-min and Yves Bissouma are ready to start after the Asian Cup and Africa Cup of Nations respectively.

Finally, Brighton have not won an away game since November or back-to-back matches since September in the league.

Over 1.5 goals in the first half – Evens (bet365)

Only Newcastle United’s games (85) have featured more goals than those involving Tottenham (84) or Brighton (80). These two sides tend to be box office.

The first meeting between the pair contained six goals, two of which came in the first half.

Brighton also made a fast start last weekend, scoring three without reply against a hapless Crystal Palace team.

De Zerbi will encourage his side to get out of the blocks quickly on Saturday too.

He is not the type of manager that will try to hold on for a 0-0 at the interval. Brighton will look to make an early breakthrough in north London.

Tottenham will be aiming to do similar. Only Manchester City and Aston Villa have scored more goals between minutes one and 45. City alone have a better overall first-half record than Spurs.

Richarlison to score any time – 6/5 (bet365)

It is fair to say Richarlison did not live up to expectations in his debut season at Tottenham, during which he only scored one goal in 27 Premier League outings.

He did not start the current campaign particularly well either, drawing a blank in 11 of his first 13 games.

Then everything clicked. Richarlison is one of the most in-form attackers in the division right now, having beaten opposition goalkeepers nine times in his last eight league games.

He has made the centre-forward spot his own in the process. Even if Son is ready to start on Saturday, he will do so from a left-wing berth.

Brighton have only kept two clean sheets this term – only Sheffield United have fewer – so the Brazil international should get his fair share of chances.

Back Richarlison to score any time at 6/5 with bet365
