Japanese businesses are ramping up preparations to deal with the results of the US presidential election in November. These include a seminar in the central Japanese city of Nagoya on potential scenarios, including a victory by former President Donald Trump.

About 500 people took part in the event, hosted by the Bank of Nagoya and the Japan External Trade Organization on Monday.

Recent polls show Trump leading the incumbent, Joe Biden, in swing states such as Pennsylvania, a JETRO official said.

She added that policy changes are expected should Trump win, especially in fields such as tariffs and electric vehicles.

A sales official at a confectionary firm said, “I attended the meeting to learn more about possible tariff changes as our company is considering exporting to the United States.”

A Bank of Nagoya official said the bank will work to offer information on the election given the keen interest in the results.
