Prison stint back to haunt Boris Becker? Tennis legend will likely struggle in coaching return after Holger Rune split

Boris Becker recently split from Holger Rune but he could yet see his coaching return halted if he was to join up with another player with complications surrounding his passports potentially warding off future tennis stars teaming up with the tennis legend.

Becker became the second coach in quick succession recently to depart from Rune’s camp alongside Severin Luthi, both owing to timing. The five-time Grand Slam champion is widely known as one of the best minds and coaches on tour. But he is unlikely to find work at least in the short term outside of his recent stints for instance on Eurosport as a commentator.

Becker spent eight months in a UK jail out of a two-and-a-half year prison stint after being found guilty of four offences under the Insolvency Act. He was deported to Germany and he now can’t travel to the UK which also ended his beloved stints as a commentator for the BBC at Wimbledon as well as to Australia and the US recently. This leaves the remainder of the tour and also likely Roland Garros as the only places he could potentially travel with no limitations. This likely prevented him in the first place from becoming a coach again until recently and may yet do so again. Mark Petchey speaking to the Tennis Channel believes also that this is the issue with question marks surrounding all facets of his potential return to the tour as a coach in future.

“That (Becker’s passport limitations) is going to be a problem going forward for Boris,” he told the Tennis Channel. “I don’t know what the situation here in the US is in terms of the rules, you know, having got that record.

“The reality for Boris is that is going to be a part of the problem for him if he does want go coaching. Because there’s at least probably two majors where he is going to struggle to get to, so that is going to limit people wanting to hire him.”
