Performance And Capability

Both the Volkswagen Golf R and the Acura Integra Type S use a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4-cylinder engine. The Integra only offers a 6-speed manual transmission. The Golf R also features a 6-speed manual gearbox. However, it is also available with VW’s slick shifting 7-speed DSG twin-clutch automatic which is more efficient, and makes the hot hatch quicker.

Interior Design And Technology

The eighth-generation VW Golf interior has been subject to some controversy. This is largely down to the touch capacitive buttons on the steering and dash. Otherwise, the Golf R’s cabin is quite spacious and can seat up to four people quite easily. However, the rear center seat is almost unusable due to the tall transmission tunnel for the all-wheel-drive system. Outward visibility from the Golf’s driver’s seat is great, and the large door apertures make ingress and egress easy from the vehicle.

The interior of the Acura Integra Type S seems underwhelming for a luxury car. The layout of the dash and cabin is quite simple and functional with large knobs and switches that are easy to use. Getting a good driver’s position is quite easy, and it is inherently very accurate for spirited driving, as the manual gear stick is positioned perfectly, outward visibility is near perfect and the cabin is overall quite spacious.

A 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard on the Integra Type S. The screen’s real estate may be small compared to its luxurious rivals, and the Golf R. However, it is responsive and quite user-friendly, and comes with a traditional volume knob. Acura has also added a wireless charging pad and a fully-digital driver’s gauge cluster.

Interior Room And Cargo Capacity

In terms of truck space, the Golf R is quite limited in cargo volume, offering 19.9 cu-ft of space. While the fast back design of the Integra Type S offers up to 24.3 cu-ft, which can be extended by folding the rear seats. While Acura hasn’t released the cargo volume with the seats folded, VW claims the Golf R can extend to 34.5 cu-ft.

Pricing And Availability

In the US, the 2024 Golf R with a manual gearbox sells for $46,890, while the Golf R automatic retails for $47,690. When it comes to color choices, Volkswagen only offers them in a single Lapiz Blue Metallic with an all-black interior, which makes personalizing the hot hatch very difficult. However, when equipped with all the accessories and options, a Golf R can cost over $52,000.

On the other hand, Acura offers the Integra Type S at a higher standard price tag of $51,800. Like the Golf R, the Integra Type S is also available in a single standard Lunar Silver Metallic color. However, Black Pearl, Carbon Metallic, Red Pearl, White Pearl, Apex Blue, and Tiger Eye Yellow paint colors are $600 options. The cabin is finished in a two-tone trim option which the Golf R does not offer. With all the accessories and options, the Integra Type S’s price can eclipse the $62,000 barrier.
