APPLE is plotting a major upgrade to its iPhone as a ChatGPT deal “nears” at it tries to catch up with Android.

A deal between the US tech giant and OpenAI is close to completion, according to reports.

If successful, that could bring ChatGPT generative AI technology to iOS 18 in some form.

Details are sketchy so far but a Bloomberg report on Friday said Apple and OpenAI are “finalising terms” to use ChatGPT in iOS 18.

As well, Apple is still in talks with Google for Gemini, according to the report, although there is no indication how advanced they are.

Apple, supposedly in line with its overall strategy, is planning to offer an AI App Store.

It is rumoured to be planning to offer smaller on-device models of its own design and will outsource large language models (LLMs) to larger, existing companies like Google.

Just days after 2023’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), it has been widely expected Apple would debut its AI efforts at the event.

Experts expect it will roll out AI-assisted browsing in Safari which will include a Siri that’s more conventional and versatile, as well as a generative AI system enabling it to chat.

Apple is also thought to have plans to use its on-device processing as a key feature for customers.

During a recent iPad event, it said it has been shipping devices with AI hardware optimisations for years.

Every iPhone and Android user gets free ChatGPT upgrade and it’ll make using AI so much easier-

There has also been a lot of discussion about Ajax, an LLM can cover many different functions that Siri can perform in theory.

For example, Apple is expected to offer text summarisation analysing whether contacts are involved, and providing more intelligent results to Spotlight.

While Apple’s rivals have decided to scrap public sources for data, Apple has taken a different route.

It has offered millions to publishers to be able to access news archives and keeping its own AI training above board.

Elsewhere, anyone with an iPhone or Android risks “log-in fatigue” mistake.

iPhone users finally get Android’s newest perk – it makes Google searches way quicker but there’s a catch.
